The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is an organ of the United Nations and is based in The Hague.
Unlike the International Criminal Court (ICC), which is also based in The Hague and is an independent court that deals with crimes perpetrated by individuals, the ICJ deals with states as a whole. All member states of the UN are party to the ICJ.
South Africa, and other extra interventions against Israel are backfiring.
To date, Libya, Mexico, “Palestine,” Spain, Turkey, Chile, the Maldives, Bolivia, Cuba, Ireland and Belize have initiated proceedings to intervene in the case under Articles 62 and 63.
The United States allocated nearly $440 million in assistance to South Africa in 2023, the most recent US government data shows.
The Norwegian-drafted resolution was adopted by the 193-member body with 137 votes in favor.
"By legally intervening in South Africa’s case, Ireland will be asking the ICJ to broaden its interpretation of what constitutes the commission of genocide by a State," the announcement read.
Newly appointed Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar spoke of normalization, the importance of minorities in the Middle East, and the right of Israel to self-defense.
According to the announcement, the Memorial claims that Israel has violated the genocide convention by promoting the destruction of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
Rather than a harbinger of global justice, the ANC, since assuming office in 1994, has become an enabler of genocide.
The resolution also calls on member states not to sell arms or military equipment to Israel that would be used in Gaza, the West Bank, and east Jerusalem.
The upcoming UN General Assembly resolution on Israel, expected to pass, reflects the ongoing international bias against Israel and the Palestinians' strategy of pursuing symbolic victories.
